work less and achieve more.

Publishing can be grueling. Spending hours of your day to manage the logistics can suck, especially when you’d rather be doing something creative.

From newspapers to blogs to yearbooks, every single publication has something in common: the need for good organization. When the website publisher doesn’t know what the editors just finished editing, and when arguments break out because no one communicates with each other, things can fall apart.

At the publications we’ve worked at, we’ve seen a lot of it. But the “easiest” ways to fix it – spreadsheets, texts, and a shared Google Drive – are cumbersome and don’t scale with the publication. They also don’t feel good to use – they aren’t pleasing and they don’t make you feel happy about your job.

So we figured out that no one had really built something like what we needed. And as such, we built it ourselves.

Pricing

As of now the pricing for the commercial Articleman service isn’t finalized. For a team of about 25 people, we’re expecting it to cost somewhere between $70 and $100 a year in total.

Licensing

Articleman should be considered “open-core” software, however, we don’t plan to lock any main features behind an Articleman subscription without providing an alternative way to access them.

Articleman itself is 100% open-source. Parts of the backing infrastructure that provide the services via Articleman.org are “source-available” and are licensed under the Sustainable Use License. You do not need to run any of the SUL-licensed code in order to self-host Articleman. In fact, we’d recommend that you don’t run our infrastructure code unless you’ve got a great reason to run a full-scale Software-as-a-Service app internally.

The reason this backing code is not open-source is to allow us to sustain development of the service by having an exclusive right to our infrastructure and multi-tenant code, so that random hosting providers can’t provide a worse product to you at a higher cost. Our code is highly optimized for our infra, and our infra is highly optimized for our code. That’s why we can often afford to give you this service for less than the cost of a single Netflix subscription.

If you’re self-hosting, then a few features that involve us having to use another vendor’s services, such as email/phone notifications or third-party login, will require you to manually set them up yourself. We’ll try and make this as easy as possible, but just know that those providers may charge you for their services. The reason you get them for free when you use hosted Articleman is that we ourselves are also clients of their services, but part of the money you already spend on your Articleman subscription goes to them when you pay us. Because we’re a larger client than you’re likely to be, we get charged less per customer to use their services.
